AGGREGATION-DIFFUSION AND KINETIC EQUATIONS, COLLECTIVE BEHAVIOR MODELS AND APPLICATIONS
EQUATIONS D’AGRÉGATION-DIFFUSION ET ÉQUATIONS CINÉTIQUES, MODÈLES DE COMPORTEMENT COLLECTIF ET APPLICATIONS.

JANUARY TO JUNE 2024

Chair > Prof. José A. CARRILLO – University of Oxford

José A. Carrillo is Professor of the Analysis of Nonlinear Partial Differential Equations at the University of Oxford in England. His expertise comprises long-time asymptotics, qualitative properties and numerical schemes for nonlinear diffusion, hydrodynamic, and kinetic equations in the modelling of collective behaviour of many-body systems such as charged particles in plasmas. He is currently interested in applications in mathematical biology such as synchronization of neurons in computational neuroscience, cell movement by chemotaxis or adhesion forces, and new applications in data science.

Local Project Leader > Prof. Anne NOURI  – Institut de Mathématiques de Marseille  – Aix-Marseille Université

Anne Nouri is a member of the Institut de Mathématiques de Marseille and a full position professor at the University of Aix-Marseille. Her Research work focuses on kinetic equations that appear in many areas of mathematical physics, such as plasma, rarefied gases or condensed matter.

SCIENTIFIC PROGRAM

Bibliothèque mathématique audiovisuelle

Cirm hosts the world’s mathematics. Over 4500 researchers meet here every year to exchange and disseminate their knowledge. As part of the Carmin Laboratory of Excellence, the Cirm wanted to store and promote this scientific data.

The Audiovisual Mathematics Library is an advanced platform built on a corpus of lectures given by mathematicians from all over the world during their time at Cirm. This platform provides all the functionalities of a high-level documentary search on a base of catalogued and enriched films.

Not virtual, not hybrid, CIRM is experimenting with a new mathematical meeting mode to help reduce our carbon footprint: mirror events!

« This initiative is ecological, but it also makes scientific sense, explains CIRM Director Pascal Hubert. It limits the carbon footprint while allowing exchanges, which is the basis of collaboration in maths. Unlike distance learning experiments, which have shown their limitations, we hope that such a model will enable the exchange of ideas and knowledge, while fostering creativity around more informal exchanges that can only exist in a face-to-face setting. This format requires very well-equipped rooms and a great deal of thought beforehand to manage the time difference and anticipate the very real technical problems that can make the experience painful. We hope that the success of this experiment will enable us to develop this fairly new model, which is very promising « .

A unique event, simultaneously on 2 continents, an audience in each center: the experience begins with a research school co-organized by CIRM and IMPA Brazil, « School on Foliation Theory », this week, from 2 to 7 p.m. in Marseille, and from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. in Rio. Speakers follow one another. The 2 audiences intervene at the end of the lectures. All presentations are broadcast live on YouTube and recorded. The 2 communities meet in their respective centers for lunch, dinner and informal exchanges.

Researchers in the mathematical community need to meet, to see each other, to exchange ideas, to advance their research and scientific progress. That’s why centers like CIRM have this vocation, this mission. CIRM hosts over a hundred mathematical events every year, and over 5,000 participants from all over the world. Centers like CIRM are rare in the world, and each has its own specificity and identity. CIRM is one of the few « all in one » centers in the world: its hotel, restaurant, amphitheatres, work rooms, library and range of services, all located at the gateway to the calanques at Marseille-Luminy, make it a place of immersion at the heart of science, unique in the world.

While CIRM, with over 40 years of experience, is built on a solid foundation, and excels in the organization of all-inclusive scientific events, it is also aware that it must look clearly to the future, consider its hosting policy from an environmental angle, and innovate and experiment to help reduce the carbon footprint of international events.
To this end, it is taking eco-responsible action at local level, and scientifically, it has decided to launch mirror events (conferences, research schools, etc.) in partnership with mathematical centers on other continents.

tribute to Maryam Mirzakhani: exhibition at CIRM

CIRM presents an exhibition in tribute to Iranian mathematician Maryam Mirzakhani, the first woman to win the Fields Medal in 2014, who passed away in 2017. This major 36-panel exhibition is divided into 3 sections:

One part of the « Remember Maryam MIRZAKHANI » exhibition is created by the International Mathematical Union ‘s Committee for Women in Mathematics (CWM) – Creator: Thais Jordao and Designer Rafael Meireles Barroso.
Another part is entirely created by CIRM under the scientific direction of Anton Zorich « Mathematical Worlds of Maryam MIRZAKHANI.
A third part created by CIRM under the scientific direction of Jayadev Athreya « Space of Shapes ».

They can be seen outside, on the footbridge, in the library and in the Café des calanques.

CIRM WANTS TO EXPERIMENT WITH NEW TYPES OF EVENTS TO LIMIT OUR CARBON FOOTPRINT!

In an eco-responsible approach, to limit our carbon footprint, we wish to develop two new modes of meetings, especially for researchers coming from outside Europe: the mirror conferences and the Fortnight events.

Mathematics for everyone

Cirm expands its programming and offers several activities throughout the year to a secondary school audience: the Cicadas (mathematical school for high school girls), high school days, the Science Festival, a catalog of accessible videos, etc.

A stay at Cirm, a French scientific research hub, can encourage young people to take up scientific careers. For secondary school students, coming to Cirm is an opportunity that can have a lasting influence on their future. Several schemes exist to date and differ greatly in duration and target audience:

The Cicadas, this school was launched in October 2019 and aims to participate in the dissemination of scientific culture and spirit while fighting against the disaffection of women for this theme.

Dissemination days: a whole day dedicated to high school students of the Aix-Marseille Academy.

Science festivals, exhibitions, etc.
