WORKSHOPS

Gathering between 5 and 50 participants, these 2 to 5 days medium-size events enable participants to focus on a specific area. They run alongside other workshops or larger events. The format is particularly well-adapted to projects funded for example by the CNRS Groupements de recherche (GDR) or by the Agence Nationale de la Recherche (ANR). They can also be the perfect way to organize a celebratory event (e.g. « Lagrange Days » or « 30 Years of Wavelets »).

​Contrary to larger conferences and schools that need to be scheduled two years before they take place, proposals for workshops can be received at any time. A decision is made within 4-6 weeks and specific dates are then arranged directly with the organizers.

Funding: External funding must be sought for the whole duration ​of the event. ​There is no special subsidy from CIRM. The cost of a week at CIRM is around 550 euros per participant. 

Research in Pairs (2 to 4 people) enable researchers to work together on specific projects such as putting the final touches to a paper or a book, studying a new problem, setting up a collaboration etc. These events last on average 1 to 2 weeks (exceptionally 3 weeks), subject to the need of the project and to room vacancies at CIRM.
Contrary to larger conferences and schools that need to be scheduled two years before they take place, proposals for research in pairs can be received at any time. A decision is made within 6 weeks weeks by the scientific committee and specific dates are then arranged directly with the applicants.

Funding: Board and lodging at CIRM is granted by CIRM for up to 3 participants from outside the Marseille region for a maximum of 2 weeks. Additional participants and local participants need to be supported by external funds. 

The aim of this partnership between the African Institute for Mathematical Sciences and CIRM is to create a bridge between CIRM and the Sub-Saharan Africa and thus increase Franco-African collaboration in the mathematical sciences.

Being a winner of this call for projects means being able to organize two 15-day stays in 2022, one at CIRM and the other in one of the AIMS centers – Senegal, Ghana, Cameroon and Rwanda.

These stays will allow the winning teams to conduct joint research, to work together on a specific project, such as the finalization of an article or a book, the study of a particular problem, the launch or continuation of a collaborative work, etc.

As part of a new ERCOM (European Research Centres on Mathematics) joint collaboration, International Research in Groups (IRiGs) enable small groups of researchers to meet for a project lasting 2 to 4 weeks in total, distributed over a period of maximum 18 months, and hosted at two of the centres. 

IRiGs is intended to encourage intense periods of research involving small groups of international researchers on a well-defined project. The international dimension of the scheme supports the project by distributing the time involved, thereby (for example) enabling the participation of researchers with caring responsibilities or allowing a different pattern of activity more appropriate to the project.

Proposals: Proposals should be submitted through the current Research in Pairs/ Groups existing programme of one of the institutions, with costs broken down for each host institute separately. If there are significant differences in the amounts requested then the co-ordinating centre should be the one from which most resource is requested. Proposers are encouraged to contact all potential host institutions to ensure that space is available on the requested dates.

Funding at CIRM: Board and lodging at CIRM is granted for up to 3 participants from outside the Marseille region for a maximum of 2 weeks. Additional participants and local participants will need to be supported by external funds.

Large conferences and research schools lasting 5 days (Monday-Friday) and gathering between 60 and 90 people are CIRM’s traditional type of events. Research schools should welcome at least 50% young researchers. The aim is to give researchers the opportunity to present and discuss recent research results, initiate future collaborative projects and cross-fertilize ideas.

Selection by CIRM’s international scientific committee is based on online proposals. Each year 35 such events are organized and average participation is around 75 people. 

Funding: Financial support from Cirm covering accommodation and meals is allocated up to a maximum of 40 participants. The total support of « 40 » is committed on the condition that at least 60 participants are included in the event. External funding must therefore be found for additional participants who may also come with their own funds. The cost of a week’s full board at Cirm for one participant is approximately 550 euros.

MULTI-YEAR PROGRAMMES : one week at CIRM guaranteed for several years
The « loyalty programme » of CIRM

​Many scientific projects need time to grow and achieve results. Bearing this in mind, CIRM has developed this programme to give teams the opportunity to stage a one-week event several years in a row.  
Proposals should fit into one of these two areas:

1. Mathematics (any research gathering mainly mathematicians or IT specialists)​. 
2. Mathematics in interaction (cross-disciplinary events associating mathematicians with other experts from other sciences such as physicists, physicians, biologists, economists, etc.). 
   ​

Usually planned over 3 years, each year stages a conference or a research school and one or several optional workshop(s).

Funding: This type of programme does not get special subsidy from CIRM. External funding must therefore be found for the whole duration of the project. The cost of a week at CIRM is around 550 euros per participant. 

CIRM-AMU THEMATIC MONTH (JOINT PROGRAMME CIRM & AIX-MARSEILLE UNIVERSITY)

Every February, CIRM and Aix-Marseille University (AMU) stage a 4 or 5-week « Thematic Month » devoted to one particular area (Statistics, Probability, Cryptography, Dynamical Systems etc.). This thematic session features conferences as well as research schools. This special month is sometimes coupled with the general topic of the Jean-Morlet Chair taking place that particular semester, thus allowing exchanges, co-funding opportunities and a larger international presence.

​Funding:  Selected applications are granted a subsidy by CIRM in the shape of « CIRM Days » (free board and lodging at the centre for 5 days for up to 40 people – as long as the event reaches at least 60 participants). Note that CIRM may choose to support all weeks in a Thematic Month or only some of them. This depends on the overall budget and  must be checked with the Event and Budget Officers. Additional external funding must be found to cover additional participants, who can also support themselves. The cost of a week at CIRM is around 550 euros. 

CIRM-IHP PROGRAMME (JOINT PROGRAMME CIRM & INSTITUT HENRI POINCARE)

​As part of the LABEX Carmin initiative, each year CIRM reserves two weeks in its calendar in order to stage the introductory weeks to full trimester programmes taking place at Institut Henri Poincaré (IHP), Paris. This programme benefits from a pre-selection made by the IHP. The second step of the application is to present a well-defined proposal online for final evaluation and selection by CIRM’s international scientific committee.

​CIRM-SMAI PROGRAMME: CEMRACS 

Each year, for a duration of six weeks, CIRM is home to a summer school programme which is proposed, organized and funded by SMAI (the French Applied and Industrial Mathematics Society). The CEMRACS is a summer school programme in « Advanced research in scientific calculation ».
The application is prepared with SMAI then a well-defined online proposal must be submitted to CIRM to be evaluated by our own international scientific committee. An additional oral presentation and discussion with the scientific committee takes place 12 to 18 months before the start of the summer programme.

Funding: Partial funding from CIRM. Additional external funding must be found for the whole duration of the project. ​​The cost of a week at CIRM is around 550 euros per participant. 

​CIRM- SMF PROGRAMME
(JOINT PROGRAMME CIRM & Société Mathématique de France)

The French Mathematical Society proposes to fund two distinct weeks per year. The format is determined each year by the SMF in a call for proposals that is published on their website.  http://smf.emath.fr/ 
To qualify for this support, proposals should meet the following requirements:
– Mini-courses during the 5 days of the event
– Give priority to PhD students , Postdocs and ERCs by allowing them to present a talk (or at least a poster)
– Some of the organizers should be members of the SMF
​The proposal must also be evaluated and accepted by CIRM’s international scientific committee.

Funding: The SMF may fund up to fifty per cent of participants, with a maximal number of supported participants equal to 20. The cost of a week at CIRM is around 550 euros per participant. 
Two such events should be funded each year for dates in January and September.

These weeks are primarily intended for groups of professionals working with mathematicians on a daily basis. They are for example the « Groupements de Services (GDS) » of CNRS: RNBM (National Network of Mathematics Libraries), MATHRICE (computer services), AUDIMATH (Around the diffusion of mathematics).

CIRM created this semester-long programme in order to extend its cooperation with international researchers, offering them the opportunity to hold a a six-month residential position, during which they collaborate with a local project leader from Aix-Marseille University or from the FRUMAM Maths Federation. Each semester focuses on a different area of mathematical sciences while following a similar general structure that combines the organization of at least 4 scientific events (2 large events and up to 4 smaller events) with a programme of invitations aimed at attracting international researchers to Provence. The online proposal is evaluated by CIRM’s international scientific committee. An oral presentation also takes place if the project is selected.
 
Funding: The Chair benefits from specific funding from various sponsors (exact details on the dedicated website). Holders are also requested to look for additional international co-funders and, to this end, can benefit from administrative support from the International Coordinator.

THE INTERFACE PROGRAMME

‘TRANSFERRING KNOWLEDGE ACQUIRED IN ACADEMIC DEPARTMENTS TO THE SOCIO-ECONOMIC WORLD IN ORDER TO PROMOTE SCIENTIFIC INNOVATION IN INDUSTRY’.

INTERFACE is an original programme of acquisition & discussion of tools and concepts in mathematical, computer and digital sciences, that are pertinent to potential users in industry: modelling, simulation, optimization. Sessions last 2 to 4 days, in full on-site immersion at CIRM. CIRM mobilizes its network of high-level mathematicians to offer short programmes for industry professionals.

Aims and objectives: 

• To strengthen knowledge on the most contemporary approaches and make the best use of recent concepts and up-to-date mathematical tools
• To be part of the flow of science « in the making » and stimulate technological innovation     
• To accompany the development of industry intelligence and knowledge     
• To create opportunities for collaborations that can lead to common projects in the long run (with the possibility of organizing small group meetings for Maths / Industry at CIRM)
