French maths represented at ECM 2024 in Seville

Seville hosted Europe’s largest mathematics congress with 1,400 participants from 70 countries

The ninth European Congress was held from July 15 to 19, 2024 in the capital of Seville, with almost 1,400 expert participants. The five-day event featured 10 plenary lectures, 2 special lectures, 31 invited lectures, 64 mini-symposia, 270 thematic papers, as well as invited papers, workshops and a cultural program including four exhibitions with mathematics as the backdrop. The European Mathematical Society (EMS) prizes were also awarded, 14 in all on this occasion.

French mathematics was represented by the “Math in France” stand hosted by INSMI-Institut National des Sciences Mathématiques et de leurs Interactions du CNRS, CIRM-Centre International de Rencontres Mathématiques, IHES-Institut des Hautes Etudes Scientifiques, FSMP-Fondation des Sciences Mathématiques de Paris and CIMPA-Centre International de Mathématiques Pures et Appliquées.

The congress ended with a beautiful closing ceremony at the Seville School of Engineering (ETSI), attended by the President of the European Mathematical Society (EMS), Jan Philip Solovej, the Chairman of the Organizing Committee, Juan González-Meneses, from the University of Seville, and the Vice-President, Isabel Fernández-Delgado, as well as other members of the committee. Among the authorities present at the closing event were the Vice-Rector for Digital Transformation at the University of Seville, María Isabel Hartillo; the Secretary General for Research at the Ministry of Science, Innovation and Universities, Eva Ortega-Paíno; the Deputy Director of the Institute of Mathematics at the University of Seville (IMUS), María Ángeles Japón; and the Director of ETSI, Andrés Sáez.

“The congress really exceeded my expectations,” said the President of the European Mathematical Society, Jan Philip Solovej, who added that ”the organizers of the next edition, to be held in Bologna, are present and I hope, indeed I know, that they are inspired by this congress.”

The King of Spain, Honorary President of the Congress, sent a message of congratulations to the organizing committee for its success, and to the winners.
